Is EMDR the right therapy for me?

If you’re on this page, you are probably wondering if Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is right for you.

On the off chance that you haven’t and have 0 clue what EMDR is, visit this information page first and then come back!

But if you have a general understanding of EMDR therapy, you’re in luck because by the end of this article you’ll be looking to book an appointment with your local EMDR therapist ASAP (which could be me!).

I want to start by mentioning that this form of therapy has a wide variety of applications and can assist with multiple presenting issues, but to keep it simple, I am going to review 5 key questions that you can ask yourself to determine if this EMDR Therapy is right for you.

1. Have I experienced trauma?

EMDR has a proven success rate of helping people recover from traumatic events and achieve a high quality of life.

A traumatic event can fall under any one of the following categories:

  • Abuse
  • Assault
  • Accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Combat or other life threatening situations
  • and more

Experiencing a traumatic event may lead to flashbacks, nightmares, feeling unsafe or numb, feeling jumpy and even steering clear of situations or people that remind you of that event.

These things can leave you feeling lost and disconnected from the world and unsure of where to start in your healing process.

EMDR therapy is comprehensive and can target trauma memories to decrease unwanted symptoms, which in turn increases positive experiences and wanted emotions in your life. Like enjoying your hobbies or hanging out with friends.

2. Have I tried therapy and feel like nothing is working?

If you are someone who has tried traditional talk therapy or other forms of therapy but find yourself feeling stuck, this could be an awesome option for you. Because EMDR uses different techniques from traditional therapies that are specifically designed to decrease emotional reactions to distressing memories, thoughts or feelings while integrating healthier ways of responding to become the version of yourself that you strive to be.

This basically means that you will feel less overwhelmed by your emotions, thoughts or memories and be able to live your life the way you want to live, instead of feeling like your emotions are in charge.

3. Am I motivated and ready to make a change in my life?

Alongside a professional, EMDR therapy directly confronts negative experiences head on so it is important to be motivated and open to feeling uncomfortable emotions.

Your therapist will guide you and ensure you are well equipped with skills before jumping into the hardest work. In this therapy, you will be processing trauma and distressing thoughts. Your willingness to experience all emotions is necessary for it to work. Don’t worry, you won’t be alone in this. You’ll have your toolbox of skills and an expert as your guide.

4. Do I have anxiety, depression or struggle to manage emotions?

Although EMDR was originally developed to treat trauma, it helps with so much more. EMDR helps with:

  • Feelings of anxiety
  • Frequent nightmares
  • Isolating from friends and family
  • Struggling with irritability
  • Low self esteem
  • and more

For example, if you find yourself anxious or panicky without a clear cause, EMDR can help. If you are struggling with feeling worthlessness or guilt over the past, EMDR assists with processing these issues to develop healthy thoughts and beliefs about yourself, others and the world.

To put it simply, EMDR can help with pretty much anything.

5. Have I consulted with a professional?

If you answered YES to question #3, then EMDR is most likely a great fit for you.

Answering yes to the other questions would also have the same conclusion, but honestly, any human who is willing to make a change in their life can benefit from EMDR no matter what you’re struggling with.

It is recommended to make an appointment with your local EMDR therapist to have a comprehensive evaluation to solidify that this is the best treatment for your personal goals.
