Why High-Functioning Depression Is Common in Fort Lauderdale’s Professionals

By José Ramirez, LMHC, CST

In a city known for sunshine, social life, and success, it can be hard to admit when something feels off. From the outside, many adults in Fort Lauderdale appear confident, productive, and well put together. They are leaders in their industries, juggling demanding schedules, maintaining relationships, keeping up appearances, and making life look effortless.

But behind that polished exterior, more and more professionals are quietly living with something called high-functioning depression.

It doesn’t look like the typical, heavy depression most people imagine. It’s subtle. Quiet. Easy to hide. And that’s exactly why so many adults in Fort Lauderdale overlook it or judge themselves for feeling this way at all.

What Exactly Is High-Functioning Depression?

Clinically, high-functioning depression often overlaps with persistent depressive disorder, but culturally, the term describes something very specific:

You’re able to keep your life running.
You’re productive.
You meet deadlines.
You show up for others.
You look “fine.”

Meanwhile, internally, you’re struggling with:

  • Chronic exhaustion
  • Low motivation
  • Feeling emotionally flat
  • Trouble enjoying things you used to love
  • Quiet hopelessness
  • Constant self-criticism
  • Going through the motions instead of living

High-functioning depression isn’t about collapsing. It’s about surviving, often at the cost of your emotional well-being. This is what makes it particularly difficult to identify, it doesn’t look like what we’ve been taught that depression looks like in popular culture. Often, when I suggest to a client that they might be experiencing high functioning depression, the reaction I most get is surprise, followed by something like, “that makes so much sense now…”

Why It’s Becoming Common Among Fort Lauderdale’s Professionals

High-functioning depression shows up everywhere, but certain parts of Fort Lauderdale’s culture can make professionals especially vulnerable.

Here are five things that could contribute to high-functioning depression:

1. Success Culture + Constant Performance

In some circles of Fort Lauderdale there is a strong high-achiever atmosphere. It can affect hospitality leaders, yachting magnates, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, creatives, real estate agents, small business owners, and professionals grinding through long hours.

Then there is the pressure to maintain an image of success. When the identity becomes “I’m the one who holds everything together,” emotions get pushed aside instead of cared for. People can inadvertently become numb or unable to identify what they’re feeling at all. Maybe they do feel the depression but feel the need to grind on due to the constant performance pressure.

2. Sunshine Can Set an Unrealistic Standard

We live in a place where people feel the weather “should” make you happy. If you wake up feeling low, drained, or numb despite the sunshine, it can create guilt:

“I have a good life. Why do I feel like this?”
“People would kill to live here. What’s wrong with me?”
“Suck it up. You should be grateful.”

This internal pressure can keep many professionals silent about their symptoms. That “should” mentioned above is a very common cognitive distortion or thinking trap. Beware of the word “should” when it shows up in your thoughts, it’s often tied to an unrealistic standard. As we say in therapy, stop “should-ing” all over yourself!

3. Social Comparison Hits Hard

South Florida can be visually driven. Beach bodies, social scenes, nightlife, travel, success. Some professionals constantly compare themselves to others and internalize messages like:

“Everyone else seems energized and thriving, I should be, too.”

That comparison quietly feeds depression.

4. Burnout Masquerades as “Normal”

Many Fort Lauderdale’s industries often require long shifts, emotional labor, or nonstop hustle.
Burnout becomes so normalized that many people no longer recognize it as a red flag. They assume exhaustion is just “part of the job.” Grind culture is a major culprit when it comes to burnout.

But chronic burnout is one of the strongest gateways into high-functioning depression.

5. Transplants Away From Support Systems

Many residents aren’t originally from Florida. Professionals move here for opportunity, lifestyle, or change. But disconnection from family or long-term friendships can increase emotional strain even if life looks “great on paper.”

Lack of a good social support system is a major contributor to depression. Not having others around to share the good and bad times with often leads to isolation which feeds depressive symptoms.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing High-Functioning Depression

Here is what high-functioning depression might look like for you:

  • You’re incredibly productive, but feel empty afterward
  • You’re always tired, even after a full night’s sleep
  • You’re irritable or overwhelmed by things that used to be simple
  • You’ve lost interest in hobbies or social activities
  • You feel lonely even when surrounded by people
  • You think, “I should be happy, so why am I not?”
  • You crash emotionally on your days off
  • You feel like you’re living on autopilot

And the biggest sign:

Everyone thinks you’re fine because you’ve gotten good at acting fine.

Why High-Functioning Depression Often Goes Unnoticed

High-functioning depression often goes unnoticed because life still works. Bills are paid, work gets done, relationships continue, no one sees the internal struggle, so the person suffering often minimizes it too. It’s also natural for our minds to compare ourselves to others around us and if we see that everyone else is thriving then we may try our best to convince ourselves and others that we are too.

Many professionals tell us:

“I don’t want to burden anyone.”
“I don’t want to look weak.”
“I don’t slow down. I keep going.”
“No one would believe me because I look successful.”

But holding everything together is not the same as being well. That’s literally not thriving, it’s surviving.

How Therapy Helps High-Achieving Adults in Fort Lauderdale

Therapy isn’t just for crisis moments. For high-functioning depression, it’s one of the most effective tools for reclaiming your life before things worsen.

A therapist can help you:

  • Understand what’s driving your emotional exhaustion
  • Break patterns of perfectionism or people-pleasing
  • Recover from burnout
  • Build healthier boundaries
  • Improve your relationship with rest
  • Reduce guilt around needing support
  • Reconnect with joy and purpose
  • Develop emotional resilience and regulation skills

You don’t have to choose between being successful and being emotionally well, you can have both.

When to Reach Out for Support

Consider seeking support if:

  • Your mood has been low most days for more than two weeks
  • You’re “functioning,” but struggling internally
  • You’re losing your sense of self
  • You feel like life is happening to you, not with you
  • Burnout feels constant
  • You can’t remember the last time you felt genuinely energized or joyful

Getting help isn’t a failure, it’s courage.
