EMDR Therapy in Fort Lauderdale

It’s time to take control of your life.

Sometimes you understand why you react the way you do, but understanding it hasn’t been enough to change the reaction. A memory, reminder, relationship conflict, or seemingly ordinary situation can still trigger fear, shame, anxiety, or a response that feels much bigger than the moment.

Our EMDR therapists in Fort Lauderdale help adults process distressing experiences that continue to affect how they feel, think, and respond today. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based, trauma-focused psychotherapy with particularly strong research support for PTSD.

EMDR does not erase what happened. The goal is to reduce how strongly past experiences continue to affect you so you can respond to your life based more on what is happening now than what happened then.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a scientifically backed therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing experiences. This evidence-based treatment is particularly effective for PTSD and trauma, anxiety, and other emotional challenges.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR is based on the idea that distressing experiences can remain inadequately processed, allowing memories, emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations connected to those experiences to continue causing distress in the present.

During EMDR therapy, you briefly focus on aspects of a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, most commonly guided eye movements, tapping, or other alternating left-right stimulation.

Over the course of treatment, the memory itself does not disappear. Instead, many people experience a reduction in the distress, vividness, and emotional intensity associated with it. Negative beliefs connected to the experience may also begin to shift.

Researchers continue to study exactly why EMDR works. Several mechanisms have been proposed, but there is not yet one definitive explanation. What is well established is that EMDR is a powerful structured psychotherapy with substantial research supporting its positive effects for PTSD.

The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a structured therapy divided into eight distinct phases:

1. History and Treatment Planning
In this phase, the therapist gathers information about your history, identifies key distressing memories, and builds a trusting therapeutic relationship.

2. Preparation
The therapist introduces EMDR therapy, provides psychoeducation, and teaches essential coping techniques to ensure you feel safe and empowered before addressing trauma

3. Assessment
Together with your therapist, you identify specific memories, emotions, and symptoms to target during EMDR sessions.

4. Desensitization
Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements or tapping), you reprocess distressing memories, helping to reduce their emotional intensity.

5. Installation
A positive belief or thought is introduced to replace negative associations with the traumatic memory.

6. Body Scan
The therapist ensures that no lingering physical tension or discomfort remains related to the memory.

7. Closure
Each session ends with techniques that restore a sense of calm and stability.

8. Reevaluation
At the beginning of each session, the therapist checks your progress and determines if additional processing is needed.

Once phase 2 is complete, phases 3-7 happen in one or more sessions.

EMDR follows these eight phases, but they do not necessarily occur in a single session or at the same pace for everyone. Your therapist may move between phases as treatment progresses, and processing a particular memory may take more than one session.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR Therapy?

Originally developed for trauma and PTSD, EMDR is now widely used to address various challenges, including:

✔ Anxiety & panic attacks
✔ Depression & low self-esteem
✔ Addiction & recovery
✔ Relationship issues
✔ Chronic pain management
✔ Grief and loss
✔ Performance anxiety

While EMDR is highly effective, it may not be suitable for individuals experiencing severe dissociation, active crisis, or neurological conditions. One of our expert therapist will conduct a screening to determine if EMDR is the right fit for you.

Could EMDR Be a Good Fit for You?

You might be interested in discussing EMDR with a therapist if:

  • Past experiences still trigger strong reactions in the present
  • You understand intellectually that something is over, but your emotional response hasn't caught up
  • Certain memories remain unusually distressing or vivid
  • Trauma, PTSD, or distressing experiences continue affecting your relationships or daily life
  • You have tried talking about an experience but still feel stuck in the same patterns

EMDR isn't automatically the right treatment for everyone. Your therapist will learn about your symptoms, history, current circumstances, and treatment goals before recommending an approach.
